Nephesh is the Old Testament word commonly translated as "soul." It means a life, a living being. The word refers to the essence of life, the act of breathing. "Soul" may be an unfortunate translation of the word. Unlike the English word "soul" which usually describes only the inner person and is contrasted with the outer person, nephesh describes the total person as a living whole. Hebraic thought understands nephesh as the totality of the human being including the spirit, the mind and emotions, and the body.
