Jesus Is Questing for the Reunion of Heaven and Earth

The ultimate reunion of heaven and earth can only mean big things for us. Now. Unimaginable things.

Why? Because we can live in the light and power of that time in the present! The is what the scriptures say to us:

“Those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come” (Hebrews 6:4-5 NASB).

Enlightenment. We can receive an increasing “spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of the Lord (a true heart, relational knowledge). I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened …” (Ephesians 1:17 NASB).

We can taste the heavenly gift now. We do this by experiencing Christ. “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!” (Psalm 34:8 ESV).

Partake of the Holy Spirit. We are to be continuously filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18. “And the communion (fellowship, partnership) of the Holy Spirit be with you all” 2 Corinthians 13:14 NKJV). We will not taste the powers of the Age to Come with a low view of the person and activity of the Holy Spirit.

Taste the good word of God. All of God’s activity in our lives is through the agency of His Word. We are born again by the seed of God’s word: “For you have been born again not of seed which is perishable, but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God” (1 Peter 1:23). All subsequent development as an apprentice of Christ and his kingdom is through the agency of his word in our lives.

Taste the powers of the age to come. The good word of God leads us into experiencing the powers of the age to come. In some measure, the future is already here! The age to come is spilling into our time for those who have ears to hear and faith to receive.

Missing the plot: the reunion of heaven and earth

What’s God up to? Is there a Grand Narrative in the Bible?

It’s been said it’s embarrassing when we realize what Jesus talked about and modeled in the Gospels, and how little we talk about it. And how little we practice what he did.

Many believers have missed Jesus’ core message and work.

What is it?

It’s the Gospel (Good News) of the Kingdom! And what Jesus is after is a Kingdom of people and the complete reunion of heaven and earth.

Jesus is on a quest

Heaven and earth were once united in the Garden of Eden. It was to be spread throughout the earth—“Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule …”

But our insistence on determining what was good and evil alienated us from the Creator. And earth separated from heaven.

The righteousness of God’s Kingdom is the product of God’s reign in the human heart. God must reign in our lives now if we are to enter the Kingdom tomorrow. —George Eldon Ladd, Gospel of the Kingdom: Scriptural Studies in the Kingdom of God

Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10 NAS).

What’s lost?

Well, we are. But we’ve also lost our place and authority.

We’ve lost our CONNECTION with the Creator … and so we’ve lost our CAPACITY to exercise dominion. To rule and reign on the King’s behalf.

Jesus seeks and saves. Christ the King is restoring all of it. And it’s underway now!

Heaven and earth will ultimately be reunited.

The core message of Jesus

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” is what Jesus said.

  • His main message is not a moral one
  • It’s not a religious quest
  • It’s not social justice
  • It’s not even about the Church
  • And, believe it or not, it’s not how to get into heaven

His life message and work is about the Kingdom of God.

It begins now for Christ-followers. It’s fulfilled later at the Second Coming of Christ.

And the Kingdom includes the reunion of heaven and earth. What’s fascinating is that this dynamic of heaven coming to earth begins now …

A mind-bender: the overlapping of heaven and earth

Here’s the prayer priority Jesus gave us (Matthew 6 and Luke 11): “Hallowed by Your name. May your Kingdom come, may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

The will of the Father—the Kingdom of God—will be completely realized at the Coming of Christ.

But it’s already here now. Penetrating and expanding like leaven (Matthew 13:33). It develops from a tiny seed into a tree of refuge for many (Matthew 13:31-32).

The Scriptures speak of This Age and The Age to Come.

It seems that the Scriptures show us that the Age to Come has already overlapped in This Age.

The future is here. It’s just not widely distributed yet. —William Gibson, coined the term “cyberspace” in 1984

Hebrews 6:4-5 says we can taste … the heavenly gift, partake of the Holy Spirit, taste the good word of God and the powers of the Age to Come!

Few believers may experience this. But we’re all called to! It’s available.

It’s the normal (not average) Christian life—part of the abundant life which Jesus promised (“I have come to give abundant life,” John 10:10).

What the reunion of heaven and earth can mean for us now

Christ’s Kingdom carves out spaces now through yielded Christ-followers. Heaven’s influence is released into the earth.

  • The Father’s healing intent can flow through us.
  • The free Spirit of Christ the Lord can manifest. The Spirit releases liberty.
  • Abundance from a higher plane is released in and through us.
  • Higher design is established via our life and work.

Internalize this potential: In light of the complete reunion of heaven and earth to come, we can experience the overlapping of heaven and earth now!

I know this may challenge the theological systems of thought we’ve experienced.

It certainly challenges naturalism and secularism.

But allow the Word and Spirit of God to recondition your inner state.

You see, our experience must come up to the level of the Word and Spirit.

We don’t pull the Word and Spirit down to our current level of development in Christ. Or our partial understanding.

Prayer and affirmation

Father in heaven, I ask for the spirit of wisdom and revelation in Christ. More and more. Open the eyes of my understanding to see more clearly. Let heaven and earth merge in me now. I resolve to live in the light and potential of your complete Story and Glory in the now! I receive everything with gratitude. Amen.
